How to Factory Reset Sony Headphones or Earbuds

A factory reset clears saved Bluetooth pairing information and restores your Sony device to its factory settings.

Before you start: Choose your Sony model below and follow its reset steps carefully.
Sony WH-1000XM4
  1. Turn the headphones OFF.
  2. Connect the headphones to a USB power source.
  3. Press and hold the Power and CUSTOM buttons together for 7 seconds or longer.
A BLUE indicator light flashes 4 times = Reset complete
The headphones are restored to factory settings and saved Bluetooth pairing information is deleted.
Sony WH-1000XM3 / WH-1000XM2

Step 1 – Prepare the Headphones

  1. Turn the headphones OFF.
  2. Make sure the USB cable is disconnected.

Step 2 – Factory Reset

  1. Press and hold the Power and NC/AMBIENT buttons together for 7 seconds or longer.
BLUE flashes 4 times = Reset complete
The saved Bluetooth pairing information has been deleted.
Sony WF-1000XM3

Step 1 – Put Both Earbuds in the Case

  1. Place both earbuds inside the charging case.
  2. Leave the charging case OPEN.
  3. Make sure both earbuds show RED.

Step 2 – Factory Reset

  1. Touch and hold the LEFT and RIGHT touch sensors at the same time.
  2. Keep holding for about 10 seconds.
  3. When the RED indicators start flashing, release your fingers.
BLUE flashes 4 times = Reset complete
The earbuds are restored to factory settings and saved Bluetooth pairing information is deleted.
Sony WI-1000X

Step 1 – Prepare the Headphones

  1. Disconnect the Micro-USB cable.
  2. Turn the headphones OFF.

Step 2 – Factory Reset

  1. Press and hold the Power and NC/AMBIENT buttons together for more than 7 seconds.
BLUE flashes 4 times = Reset complete
The headphones are restored to factory settings and saved Bluetooth pairing information is deleted.

Pair with an Avantree Transmitter Again

  1. Put the Sony headphones or earbuds into Bluetooth pairing mode.
  2. Put the Avantree transmitter into Bluetooth pairing mode.
  3. Keep both devices close together and wait for them to connect.
Reset Did Not Work?
  1. Make sure you are following the instructions for your exact Sony model.
  2. For WH-1000XM3, WH-1000XM2, and WI-1000X, disconnect the USB cable before resetting.
  3. For WH-1000XM4, turn the headphones OFF first, then connect them to USB power.
  4. Hold the buttons for the full amount of time.
  5. Wait for BLUE to flash 4 times.
  6. For WF-1000XM3, make sure both earbuds are seated in the open charging case and showing RED before starting.
