How to Factory Reset Apple AirPods or AirPods Pro

Reset your AirPods if they will not connect, keep connecting to the wrong device, or are not working correctly.

Before you start: Charge the AirPods and charging case before resetting them. Choose the type of case you have below.

AirPods 1 / AirPods 2 / AirPods 3 / AirPods Pro 1 / AirPods Pro 2

Step 1 – Forget the AirPods

If your AirPods are still listed on your iPhone or iPad:

Go to Settings → Bluetooth.
Tap the ⓘ next to your AirPods.
Tap Forget This Device.
Confirm.

If the AirPods are not listed, continue to Step 2.

Step 2 – Put Both AirPods in the Case

Put both AirPods inside the charging case.
Close the lid and wait 30 seconds.
Open the lid and keep both AirPods inside the case.

Step 3 – Factory Reset

With the lid open, press and hold the Setup button on the back of the case.
Keep holding for about 15 seconds.
Release the button when the status light flashes WHITE.

AMBER flashing, then WHITE flashing = Reset complete

AirPods 4 / Newer AirPods with a Buttonless Case

These models use the front of the charging case instead of a Setup button.

Step 1 – Forget the AirPods

If the AirPods are listed on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ → Forget This Device.

Step 2 – Prepare the AirPods

Put both AirPods inside the charging case.
Close the lid and wait 30 seconds.
Open the lid.

Step 3 – Factory Reset

Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is ON.
When the light flashes WHITE, double-tap the front again.
When the WHITE light starts flashing faster, double-tap the front a third time.

AMBER flashing, then WHITE flashing = Reset complete

Pair with an Avantree Bluetooth Transmitter Again

Keep both AirPods inside the case and leave the lid OPEN.
Press and hold the Setup button on the back of the case, or use the front-of-case pairing method for buttonless cases.
Flashing WHITE = AirPods pairing mode
Put the Avantree transmitter into Bluetooth pairing mode.
Keep the AirPods case and transmitter close together while they connect.

Reset Did Not Work?

Status Light Does Not Flash WHITE

Put both AirPods back inside the charging case.
Close the lid for about 20 seconds.
Open the lid.
Repeat the reset procedure for your AirPods model.

AirPods Keep Connecting to Another Device

Turn Bluetooth OFF on nearby phones, tablets, computers, or TVs that previously connected to the AirPods. Then put the AirPods and Avantree transmitter into pairing mode again.
