Set Your TV Digital Audio Output to PCM

If your Avantree transmitter is connected to your TV using Optical or HDMI ARC, the TV needs to send a compatible digital audio signal. For most setups, the correct format is PCM.

Start Here

You only need to check two TV settings.

First select the correct audio output, then set the digital audio format to PCM.

Avoid: Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, Bitstream, Auto, or Pass Through if they prevent the transmitter from receiving audio.

Choose the Audio Output

For Optical, select Optical / Digital Audio Out. For HDMI ARC, select HDMI ARC / Receiver.

Choose the Audio Format

Find Digital Audio Output / Digital Sound Output and change the format to PCM.

Find the PCM Setting for Your TV

Choose your TV brand below. Only the instructions for that brand will appear, so you do not have to scroll through every TV manufacturer.

Samsung TV

Menu path: Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output
  1. Press Home on the Samsung remote.
  2. Open Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output.
  3. Select Optical or HDMI ARC.
  4. Return to Sound and open Expert Settings.
  5. Set Digital Output Audio Format → PCM.
Correct result: Digital Output Audio Format shows PCM.

Look for Digital Output Audio Format, Digital Audio Output, Expert Settings, or Sound Output.

LG TV

Menu path: Settings → Sound → Sound Output
  1. Press Settings on the LG remote.
  2. Open Settings → Sound → Sound Output.
  3. Select Optical Out Device or HDMI ARC.
  4. Find Digital Sound Output.
  5. Set Digital Sound Output → PCM.
Correct result: Digital Sound Output shows PCM.
Still no sound? If Dolby Atmos is enabled, try turning it off.

Look for Sound Out, Sound Output, Digital Sound Output, or Use Wired Speaker.

Sony TV

Menu path: Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output
  1. Press Quick Settings or Home.
  2. Open Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output.
  3. Find Digital Audio Out.
  4. Set Digital Audio Out → PCM.
Correct result: Digital Audio Out shows PCM.
Also check: If available, set Dolby Digital Plus Output → Off.

TCL TV

Menu path: Settings → Sound → Audio Output
  1. Press Home.
  2. Open Settings → Sound → Audio Output.
  3. Select Optical or HDMI ARC.
  4. Open Advanced Settings → Digital Audio Out.
  5. Select PCM.
Correct result: Digital Audio Out shows PCM.
My TCL menu looks different

TCL menus vary between Google TV, Android TV, and Roku TV. Look for Audio Output, Digital Audio Out, or Digital Audio Format.

Roku TV

Menu path: Settings → Audio
  1. Press Home.
  2. Open Settings → Audio.
  3. Find Digital Output Format or S/PDIF and ARC.
  4. Select PCM-Stereo / Stereo.
Correct result: Digital audio output is set to PCM / Stereo.

Hisense TV

Menu path: Settings → Sound → Audio Output
  1. Press Home.
  2. Open Settings → Sound → Audio Output.
  3. Select Optical or ARC.
  4. Find Digital Audio Out.
  5. Select PCM.
Correct result: Digital Audio Out shows PCM.

Hisense TVs may use Google TV, VIDAA, Roku TV, or Fire TV. Look for Digital Audio Out, Audio Format, or SPDIF.

VIZIO TV

Menu path: Menu / Settings → Audio
  1. Press Menu or Settings.
  2. Open Audio.
  3. Find Digital Audio Out.
  4. Select PCM.
Correct result: Digital Audio Out shows PCM.

Philips TV

Menu path: Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output
  1. Press Home.
  2. Open Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output.
  3. Find Digital Audio Out or Audio Output Type.
  4. Select PCM.
Correct result: Digital output is set to PCM.

Panasonic TV

Menu path: Menu → Sound / Audio → Digital Audio Out
  1. Press Menu.
  2. Open Sound or Audio.
  3. Find Digital Audio Out or Digital Audio Selection.
  4. Select PCM.
Correct result: Digital Audio Out shows PCM.

Sharp TV

Menu path: Settings → Sound → Advanced Audio Settings
  1. Press Settings.
  2. Open Sound → Advanced Audio Settings.
  3. Find Digital Audio Out Type.
  4. Select PCM.
Correct result: Digital Audio Out Type shows PCM.

Insignia TV

Menu path: Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output
  1. Press Settings.
  2. Open Display & Sound → Audio Output.
  3. Find Digital Audio Format.
  4. Select PCM.
Correct result: Digital Audio Format shows PCM.

Insignia TVs may use Fire TV software. Look for Audio Output, Digital Audio Format, or PCM.

Can't Find the PCM Setting?

TV menus can differ by model and software version. Search using your exact TV brand and model number.

After Setting Your TV to PCM

Play a TV program or video that has sound. If the TV output, cable, transmitter input, and listening device are connected correctly, your Avantree transmitter should now receive the TV audio.

PCM Is Selected but Still No Sound?

Check these three common causes before changing more TV settings.

1. Check the TV Audio Output

Make sure the TV is sending audio to Optical / Digital Audio Out or HDMI ARC.

2. Check the Cable & Port

For Optical, use OPTICAL OUT. For HDMI ARC, use the HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC.

3. Check the Transmitter

Make sure the transmitter input mode matches the cable and confirm that its audio signal indicator detects TV audio.

Sound works after selecting PCM?

You're done. No other TV audio changes are needed unless you change the connection type or your TV software later changes these settings.
