How Can I Improve FM Reception or Reduce Static?
Follow Steps 1 → 2 → 3 in order. If reception is still poor, continue with the additional checks below.
Step 1 – Check the Antenna First
A properly positioned antenna can make a big difference.
If your radio has a pull-up antenna:
- Extend the antenna all the way.
- Slowly change the antenna angle.
- Stop when the station sounds clearer.
If your radio uses the power cord as the antenna:
- Fully extend the power cord.
- Do not leave the cord rolled or bundled together.
- Try moving the cord to a different position.
Tip: Small changes in the antenna or cord position can improve reception.
Step 2 – Move the Radio Near a Window
- Move the radio closer to a window.
- Play the station you want.
- Slowly move the radio to a few different positions.
- Stop where the station sounds clearest.
Walls, furniture, and enclosed areas can weaken FM signals.
Step 3 – Move Away From Metal and Electronics
Do not place the radio directly on or next to large metal objects or metal surfaces.
Move the radio a few feet away from Wi-Fi routers, TVs, computers, phones, chargers and power adapters, microwaves, and LED lights.
Place the radio on a table, shelf, or another open location and test the station again.
Easy test: Turn nearby electronics OFF one at a time. If the static stops, you may have found the source of the interference.
Step 4 – Try 2 or 3 Other Stations
Test 2 or 3 different FM stations.
Other stations sound clear? The original station may have a weak signal in your area.
Several stations still have static? Continue to Step 5.
Step 5 – Try Another Room
- Move the radio to a different room.
- If possible, place it near a window.
- Set up the antenna again.
- Try the same station.
- Try 2 or 3 other stations.
Reception is better? The original room likely has a weaker signal or more interference.
Step 6 – Still Poor Reception? Reset the Radio
If reception is still poor after trying all the steps above, try a Factory Reset.
Reset steps can vary by radio model. Follow the guide below for the correct reset instructions.
After the reset: Return to FM mode, search for stations again, and test several stations.
Quick Check
Only one station has static? The station may have a weak signal in your area.
All stations have static in one room? Try another room and move away from electronics.
Still poor after the reset? Contact Avantree Support.
