For majority older models of TV, the built-in speaker is muted once you plug anything into an audio output port (AUX, RCA, Optical, etc.). Some newer TVs, however, may give you the option to play audio from both the TV's internal speakers and an external audio device simultaneously.

If your TV is LG:

LG newer WebOS models (WebOS 3.0 and 3.5 models) support this feature.

Audio from TV internal speaker and an external audio device can be played simultaneously on LG newer WebOS models (WebOS 3.0 and 3.5 models).

If you use TV OPTICAL output, change your LG TV Sound Out as following:

Audio is played through the TV’s built-in speakers and the audio source connected to the digital optical audio output port simultaneously.

If you use TV AUX/RCA output, change your LG TV Sound Out as following:

Audio is played through the TV’s built-in speakers and the audio source connected to the AUX/RCA output port simultaneously.

NOTE: If you connect the transmitter to the AUX/RCA while the TV is powered on, it automatically detects the transmitter and redirects audio through them.
