Bluetooth Class 1 vs. Class 2

Follow

Bluetooth is a short range wireless communication by nature. There are two types, class 1 and class 2. Class 1 can stream up to 100meters / 300feet line of sight and class 2 10 meters / 30 feet line of sight in open air no interference environment. Since the environment we live has a lot of wifi and other wireless signal interference, the range is normally shorter in real life at home.

If are using a class 2 Bluetooth transmitter, you can achieve up to 5-10 meters / 15-30 feet with your headphone / speaker, depends also on the receiving device itself. Normally, an over ear headphone and a well designed speaker has better range than a small earbuds. The antenna design of the receiving device also play an important role in the range to achieve.

If are using a class 1 Bluetooth transmitter, you can achieve up to 50-80 meters / 150-240feet with your headphone / speaker, depends also on the receiving device itself. e.g. Oasis with Avantree Audition Pro headphone can achieve 90 meters / 270 feet in outdoor environment.

Over 95% of the device on the market was tested as class 2. Oasis is one of the 5% which can achieve the transmission / receiving power at class 1 level, tested and certified by leading international testing lab.

If you want to achieve a really good range, you have to avoid using very small earbuds where wireless antenna does not have a good environment to be designed on the PCB board.
